Schwitzhütte

Diese Beschreibung ist für ein Lexikon erstaunlich gut komprimiert. Denoch spricht das Buch nur von der Vergangenheit. Auch gilt die Darstellung der Schwitzhütte nicht für alle indianischen Nationen. Was jedoch wichtig ist, dass die Schwitzenhütten-Zeremonien noch heute sehr großen Stellenwert in den indianischen Kulturen haben.
Diese Rituale sehen von Stamm zu Stamm anders aus. Die Darstellung im Lexikon spricht von einem "ursprünglichen" religiösen Zweck und nur die körperliche Reinigung sei übrig geblieben. Leider handelt es sich bei dieser Betrachtung um eine falsche Wiedergabe der Tatsachen. Schwitzhütten dienen heute zum selben Zweck wie vor hunderten von Jahren. Die Schwitzhütten-Plätze sind heilige Stätten. Kein anständiger Mensch, egal welche Glaubensrichtung er selbst vertritt, darf solch einen Platz besudeln, beschädigen oder gar zerstören.

Schwitzhütten sind heute hinter vielen Wohnungen von Indianern zu finden. Sie gehören dort zum Altag, wie bei uns Kirchengebäude. Nicht jeder hat die Möglichkeit Schwitzhütten in der beschriebenen Form des Lexikons zu erstellen. Viele indianische Nationen haben viele verschiedenen Formen von Schwitzhütten vorgebracht. Manche entstehen zwischen zwei Hügeln, manche in der Erde. Gott ist überall. Nicht die Form der Gebetstätte zählt. Schwitzhütten begleiten ebenso andere Zeremonie wie: Tipizeremonie, Sonnentanz, Heilungen, Visionssuchen und vieles mehr.

Sweat Lodge

This explanation is surprisingly compact for an encyclopedia definition.  On the other hand, it only refers to the past. Also, this description of a sweat lodge does not apply to all the Indian Nations. It remains, however, a fact that sweat lodge ceremonies play a very important part in the Indian culture of today. These rituals vary from tribe to tribe. The encyclopedia description talks about the “original” sacred purpose, and that only the purpose of bodily cleansing has remained.  Unfortunately this point of view gives a wrong representation of the facts. Sweat lodges serve the same purpose today as they did several hundred years ago.  Sweat lodge locations are sacred sights.  No honest person, regardless of his faith would befoul, damage, or destroy such a place.

Sweat lodges today can be found behind most Indian homes.  They belong to every day life like our churches.  Not everyone has the possibility to build a sweat lodge as described in the encyclopedia.  Many Indian Nations have come up with different designs.  Some are erected between two hills and some are in the ground.  God is everywhere.  The shape of the sacred site is not important.  The sweat lodge ceremony often goes along with other ceremonies such as: the tipi ceremony, sun dances, healing ceremonies, vision searching and many more.
